  37   VA require s the Vers ion Descri ption Docu ment (VDD)  to identi fy, mainta in, enhanc e, and rec reate the  product (I nformation  Technolog y [IT] ass et) throug hout its l ifecycle.  The VDD re inforces s trong risk  managemen t practice s and help s protect  VA from lo ss of the  product (I T asset),  which is e specially  important  with a reg ular rotat ion of per sonnel and  contracto rs.

  47   Project ma nagers and  configura tion manag ers use th e VDD temp late as a  tool for m anaging co nfiguratio n items an d baseline s associat ed with th e deployab le product . It is th e responsi bility of  the projec t manager  to ensure  the proces ses are fo llowed wit hin the pr oduct buil d process  (Process A sset Libra ry [PAL],  Product Bu ild [BLD]:  BLD-1 Dev elop Produ ct Compone nt). The e xpectation  is for th e VDD to b e controll ed as a so urce file  with one V DD per Pro duct. Ther e may be m ultiple ve rsions bei ng managed  within th e Software  Configura tion Manag ement (SCM ) reposito ry, all fo llowing th e baseline  process.  The IT con figuration  managers  (or IT arc hitect/dev elopment l eads) ensu re that cr eation and  modificat ion of the  product’s  VDD is in tegrated w ith any pa rallel act ivities be ing perfor med on the  said prod uct. The c onfigurati on manager  creates/u pdates the  VDD each  time the d eliverable  (file set ) leaves t he develop ment envir onment, su ch as for  testing or  deploymen t. The VDD  is the re presentati on and res ult of the  SCM proce dures bein g followed . The prod uct’s proc edures, al ong with w ork instru ctions, ar e to be cr eated and  maintained  by the IT  configura tion manag ers (or IT  architect /developme nt leads).  For produ ct procedu re informa tion, refe r to the S oftware Co nfiguratio n Manageme nt Procedu res Templa te (PAL, P roject Pla nning: PRP  3.7). The  project m anager is  responsibl e for ensu ring the c onfigurati on manager  maintains  versions  of the VDD  and deliv erables (f iles) in t he TRM-app roved conf iguration  management  system.
