  1   The Depart ment of Ve terans Aff airs (VA)  has establ ished lead ership in  genomic me dicine thr ough the u ndertaking  of a grou nd-breakin g program  called the  Million V eteran Pro gram (MVP) . Launched  in 2011,  MVP invite s users of  the VA he althcare s ystem nati onwide to  participat e in a lon gitudinal  study with  the aim o f better u nderstandi ng the int er-relatio n of genet ic charact eristics,  behaviors  and enviro nmental fa ctors, and  Veteran’s  health. T oday, with  over 500, 000 partic ipants and  recruitin g at 50 VA  sites nat ionally, M VP is the  largest ge nomic rese arch datab ase in the  world. Th e MVP data  consists  of blood s amples fro m consenti ng Veteran s that is  used to ge nerate gen omic data,  data from  questionn aires and  the electr onic healt h record d ata. This  resource i s made ava ilable to  VA researc hers and V A-approved  affiliate s to pursu e genomic  discoverie s and vali dation stu dies that  can lead t o personal ized healt hcare for  Veterans.  Ultimately , over the  long term , validate d scientif ic finding s will be  returned t o the Vete ran and in corporated  into thei r medical  record to  fulfill th e potentia l of perso nalized me dicine – d elivery of  optimal i nterventio ns to pati ents based  on their  biological  character istics. 
  2   The primar y componen t of the p roject is  the Genomi c Informat ion System  for Integ rative Sci ence (Geni sis) platf orm. Genis is 1.0, im plemented  over a fou r-year per iod (2011  - 2015), f eatures a  series of  modular ap plications  to facili tate recru itment and  enrollmen t of MVP p articipant s, automat ing most s tudy-relat ed logisti cs includi ng study e nrollment,  clinical  study data  capture,  consent, b lood sampl e tracking , and geno mic data s torage. Ge nisis 1.0  also provi des the se cure analy tical infr astructure  necessary  to conduc t robust g enomic and  bioinform atics-rela ted data m anagement  and data a nalysis. T his remote ly accessi ble analys is environ ment featu res a high - performa nce comput ing cluste r with sig nificant s torage cap acity and  tools for  scientific  analysis  of combine d genotypi c and phen otypic dat a.
  3   This proje ct, Genisi s2 Technic al Service s, provide s addition al functio nality to  the Genisi s 1.0 plat form by au tomating d ata proces sing, data  request t ransaction s, and dat a request  tracking f or integra ting VA In formatics  and Comput ing Infras tructure ( VINCI) cli nical data  into Geni sis2, as w ell as pro viding enh anced syst em adminis tration.   Additional  informati on is avai lable in t he Master  Test Plan  that suppo rts Genisi s2 Build 3
