The Portal Service provides the My Mobile Desktop a service where the applets and applications displayed for a given user are stored and retrieved from. Upon login in to My Mobile Desktop, the application connects to the service and looks up the applets and apps for the user from the service. The Settings applet is used to set the applets and apps that will be displayed for the user.

The Portal Service also provides an endpoint to determine if a user is an administrator. This endpoint is used by the Notifications applet to determine if user can broadcast messages.
