The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Amputation Reporting System provides an innovative way to enhance the care of Veteran amputees. The development of this system is being completed in two phases. Phase II, the Amputee Registry project, will enhance the capabilities developed in Phase I by providing a mechanism to capture validated information collected by the standardized outcome assessment tools at the point of contact in the amputation specialty clinic setting, extract data from the clinical record, and aggregate and store data so that it can be incorporated into the Amputation Reporting System.

The Amputee Registry will also have the capabilities to identify the variations of rehabilitation care
practices, prosthetic technology and services, incidence of complications, and secondary disabilities. In addition, the system will provide reports to justify the modification and standardization of clinical practices, which will enhance the quality of care and quality of life for all Veterans Health Administration (VHA) amputation patients.

The Health Registries (HREG) Amputee Registry project is also slated to be integrated into the Converged Registries Solution Enhancement (CRSe) operational environment to enable better facilitation and tracking of care and treatment for Veterans.
