This RSD and SDD were developed for the Breast Cancer Clinical Case Registry (BCCCR) project utilizing the Department of Veterans Affairs’ (VA) Transformation Twenty-One Total Technology acquisition program, known as T4. The Office of Public Health and Environmental Hazards and the Women’s Veterans Health Strategic Health Care Group support this request to implement a clinical case registry in order to monitor and track diagnostic testing, treatment, and monitoring of breast cancer for all Veterans and their beneficiaries, facilitate coordination of care, and improve management and timeliness of treatment for all Veterans and their beneficiaries.
The VA has implemented numerous clinical case registries (including a Traumatic Brain Injury registry, Embedded Fragment Registry, and Eye Injury Registry, as examples) which have become a critical tool for improving patient care. Currently there is no data captured or stored in any of the VA’s registries for normal or abnormal test results for breast cancer (i.e. Mammograms), therefore this project seeks to leverage past registry implementations and develop a BCCCR to address this issue. The new registry will possess the capacity to identify, monitor and track everyone with normal or abnormal mammogram results from time of ordering, and assess sequential milestones in the diagnostic work-up and treatment of breast cancer. The registry will have the ability to provide tools to assess selected groups and assess milestones in their management of care. Paired with existing local clinical reminders and the Tracking of Abnormal Results (TAR) project, this package of patient and population management tools will improve detection, diagnosis, treatment and management of breast cancer within the Veterans Health Administration (VHA).
