This program level project implements barcode wireless technology that will enable positive patient identification at the point of care for clinical specimen collection, anatomic pathology specimen collection, and blood administration, as well as reduce adverse events associated with incorrect blood product transfusion; mislabeling of laboratory, anatomical pathology, and blood specimens; and decrease adverse events associated with surgical procedures.

This project will allow VistA applications to interface with a vendor PPID and labeling device, to reduce specimen mislabeling and improve patient safety.

Patient misidentification is a persistent cause of adverse events in VHA facilities. Implementation of specified wireless technology functionalities will standardize patient identification to enhance the safety, timeliness, and accuracy of health care delivery to veterans.
